ear candling

i have an awful sinus infection. my mom asked me if i had ever heard of ear candling, and i said that i hadnt. well, she has a friend that does it, and its supposed to clean out the ears as well as the sinuses behind the ears. so i went to woodys aunt carolyns house this evening because she does ear candling. i will attempt to describe it: there are these hollow candles that are about an inch in diameter. they are made with a loose-knit cloth (like cheesecloth but looser) that is covered in wax and then (i imagine) wound around a one inch dowel or something. the end that goes in your ear comes together like a cone. anyway, you light the end that does not go in your ear on fire and place the ear end in your ear while lying down. the fire i guess creates negative pressure and all the gunk comes out of the ear canal and sinus. here are some photos:

i've heard about it before. the first person that told me about it was dj jordan, for whatever that's worth. he said that when he did it it really felt like he could hear so much better.

when i looked into it, i read a lot of mixed reviews. some talked about how great it was, and others talked about how it was just bs. i don't know.

i do know that i had a build up of fluid behind my ear drum and it was really annoying. i went to a dr and he put me on some drugs. it helped.

The skeptic in me wants to see what a candle looks like that was burnt without having been stuffed into somebody's head.

I've always wanted to do that. Being a person who has always had "a lot of ear wax" I always find it so satisfying to clean a big chunk out of your ear.

So when I die you and Woody better do a good job cleaning out my ears.

Is the bottom photo your candle?

JD, I've read skeptics and they say that the inside looks the same either way, that a lot of the gunk inside is just melted/burned material that fell from the burning edge above.

yeah, i read the negative stuff as well as the positive stuff and i figured that if it made me feel better, then cool, if not, then cool. and really, i feel like i have less pressure in my ears, and i feel better today than i did yesterday (although maybe its the antibiotics). and there are always skeptics that can disprove anything, i mean, arent there people out there that can prove that global warming is b.s.? well, it might be that ear candling is crap, but id do it again for sure. and its relaxing!

and yes those are my ear candles.

Please read. Junk inside the ear candle comes from the candle, so it is a waste of time and money -- but it is your time and money, so I wouldn't be bothering you except for cases where, for example, burning hot wax from the candle has fallen into the ear and burned a hole in the eardrum.

If you really want to do this, at least hold the candle horizontally su burning stuff doesn't fall into your ear. You won;t see as much stuff inside the candle when you do, since it won't fall in there from the burning candle, but you won;t be as likely to injure yourself...
